What is an Education Assistant?

Education Assistants are busy working in almost every school in BC.  Supporting students with special needs and supporting classroom teachings in the delivery of the educational learning outcomes.  The skill set of an EA can be as complex as the needs of the classroom.

Consider an EA needs to be flexible and adaptable.  Every year the EA is given a new assignment.  The assignment will bring a new learning curve and adjustment to the skill set required to do the job.

The position is driven by the needs of the child.  The first component of knowledge comes into play. Does the EA have the enough information about the needs?  In my 25 years as an EA, I always felt each year I needed to draw in more knowledge to support the expectations of what was needed.  Every single child is unique and had different challenges.

Equally important is the relationship the EA must make with the teacher.  If you are lucky enough to stay at a school year after year your relationship with teachers grows , therefore your ability to can grow and the EA become an effective team member of a school.  Like a teacher, this is a profession you grow and specialize in.

For most of my career, I was fortunate to work in the largest school district in the province.  Opportunity to learn and grow was easy as jobs are plentiful and the finding job satisfaction can happen by just transferring to another position. This is not easy if you work in a small district with limited jobs.

It is  possible an EA ends up working with a student that will challenge the skill set or the relationship with the teacher is not suitable.

What makes a good EA?  Stenberg College  lists the following criteria one should consider if thinking about choosing this path.

An EA can specialize in an area.  An EA can choose to work only with elementary school children or  high school students.  Some children are on and academic track and some on a life skill track.  Positions can vary and be supporting with students that have intensive behaviour and complex language delays, children with high medical needs and learning disabilities.

In my 25 years, I have supported with Verbal Apraxia     Down Syndrome    Autism ADS Medically Fragile  FASD  Dyslexia  Learning Disabilities  Anxiety Disorders .  The goal working with each of these children was to create access to education.

Educating the child lies with the teacher, creating access to the teacher and the education is the role of the EA.  Learning to create access properly requires ongoing professional development, a reflection of practice, and mentorship.

Comparing EA courses

Roles and ResponsibilitiesSo you have decided to become an EA. Now to choose a where you will study.  There is plenty of schools now offering the EA course. Cost, course length and employment opportunities differ for each college.

You may want to consider what your short term and long term goals are before you plan what school you want to go to. Consider also that some courses will limit where you can work. Continuing Ed programs offered at a local school district may restrict your employment opportunities to just that district.

A few colleges have you working on a degree which may lead you into Social Services or becoming a teacher. Some of the best Special Education Teachers I have met started their profession as an EA. If your long-term goal is to be a teacher, then you may want to study at a post-secondary college that will give you transferable credits.

 

Let’s take a look at some of the places where you would want to consider taking your training.

I wanted to add not all institutions offer the same structure or format and different learning outcomes.  Certificates were offered at some schools and diplomas at another.  In my opinion not all of the programs equipped EAs with all the required knowledge.  In today’s classrooms knowledge of behaviour is critical.

In British Columbia, you should start with  Make A Future for an overview of where the jobs are at in Education.

You are  likely to get a job within months of graduation from any of these colleges.  The need is high, some districts run short of on-call EAs on a regular basis.

 

Listed below are colleges for a general Education Assitant job.  If you desire Sign-Language Interpreter or ABA therapist you will need additional training.

Once hired you can expect to be on-call for a few years, but you should have steady work.

Langara College – Vancouver   39 transferable credits Full-time 1-year certificate or add 30 credits to earn a 2-year diploma  39 credits=

Capilano University-North Vancouver   30 credits Full-time & Part-time 6 terms (20 months) certificate 600 hours

Stenberg College 1200 hours Full-time in class diploma & On-line learning

Douglas College-Coquitlam   39 credits 1.5-year certificate also 63 credits 2-year diploma

Delta School District Continuing Ed Part-time evenings & weekends – 10 months certificate program  505 hours

Surrey School District SurreyCollege   40 weeks  1000 hours Full-time 10 months diploma program

Sprott Shaw College 13 Lower Mainland Locations 42 weeks 905 hours with flexible hours certificate program

Kwantlen Polytechnic University Langley-Surrey  39 credits Full-time & part-time certificate with transferable credits

College of the Rockies-Kootenay 43 credits 810 hours certificate program plus option to continue to diploma program

Camosun College- Victoria  37 credits 10-month Full-time 2 years Part-time  certificate with transferable credits to degree programs Child & Youth Care Worker

The University of the Fraser Valley Abbotsford Community Support Worker 10 months certificate full-time  with transferable credits to a Social Service Diploma

MTI Community College 4 Locations 900 hours 45 weeks Full-time diploma program

My personal view is that all of the courses listed  will get graduates a job, but after that, the commitment to ongoing development is up to the individual.

Staying current in the  practice and committing to being flexible and willing to learn will enhance the ability to achieve job satisfaction.
